Ault Hucknall

Nook of land belonging to a man called Hucca.

He lies in the quiet church on its green hilltop, the poor parson's son whose portrait hangs with those of kings and queens, and nobles in Hardwick Hall nearby, and who had among his friends Ben Jonson and Galileo. He was Thomas Hobbes, who died with a name ringing through Europe.

Much of his early childhood was spent at the Hall as a tutor, and in his later years he made his home at Hardwick and Chatsworth. He lived to be nearly 92, his mind vigorous to the last, fond of his dozen pipes of tobacco ready filled in front of him. He died at Hardwick Hall in 1679 soon after he had expressed his wish that his epitaph should be simply "The Philosopher's" Stone. However the black marble stone in the floor of the Hardwick chapel tells of his service to learning.
