Bamburgh
Originally, this was Bebba's Burgh. Bebba was the nickname that King Ida the Flamebearer gave his wife who, it seems, ruled his household with an iron tongue. Upon landing from Scandinavia, they constructed an earth and stone fort on a hump of land close to the sea, guarding the coast road between Pons Alius (Newcastle) and Odin's Burgh (Edinburgh). Prior to that, the hump of land had been called Dun Guardia (hill that guards) and may have been occupied by ancient Britons. When the English established a Christian community at nearby Lindis Farun (Holy Island), Bebba (her husband now presumed dead) supported them, although she may not have actually become a Christian herself.
