Burton-upon-Trent In 1002, it was recorded as Byrtun. Originally, a burg was a hill but later was a fortress built on a hill and, later still, any fortified place. So, we have a tun (enclosure) either on a hill (unlikely in the Trent Valley) or beside a fort.
