Byrness has a commanding position at the neck of Redesdale just before it rises to Carter Bar at the modern border with Scotland. This was on a northern extension of the original Roman Road, Dere Street, which ran from London to Corbridge on Hadrian's Wall. Often, this road got closed by weather and later travelers were reluctant to cross the bleak Cheviot in winter. Thus, the modern A1 trunk route follows the coast to the east instead. The scenery here has to be seen to be believed, the views from Carter Bar covering hundreds of square miles.
