Lindisfarne

There are a number of islands off the coast of Northumberland and the Old English word for island was farun. Before the English settled here, this one of the faruns was named Metgod or, later, Metcaud. Later, this particular farun was identified by the prefix Lindis, making it Lindisfarne. It gained the name "Holy" only when St Cuthbert isolated himself here to make copies of the Holy Scriptures.
