Retford

In Domesday, it was Redford. Raedd (likely pronounced Roth) is the Celtic word from which we get "red," "ruddy", "rotten", "wrath (when you become red-faced)", and "wreath (which traditionally has red berries)". It is also in place names as far afield as Rotherham, Rothbury, Penrith, Rottington, Rutherford and Rotterdam. Likely, this was due to red soil or clay which stained the river (in this case the Idle).
