Shrewsbury In 1016, the city was Scrobbesbyrig, the burg (hill, hillfort or general fortified place depending on when the name was first used) in scrubland. Fifty-two years later, it was recorded in Domesday as Sciropesberie, then Salopesberia in 1156, Shrobesbury in 1327, and Shrovesbury by 1346. Pronunciation is Shrowsberry, not Shrewsberry. | |||||
