Soulby.

From the Old Norse meaning "short valley".

Soulby is a small village lying some two miles north west of Kirkby Stephen.
The village contains no buildings of great antiquity, though many of the houses have door lintels or tablets bearing 17th and 18th century dates. The oldest building will be the parish church of St Luke which dates from 1663. It was originally a 'chapel' of the church of Kirkby Stephen, for it was not until 1873 that Soulby became a separate parish.
Just half a mile above the village stands the old water mill...remains of the mill race are still noticeable.
The village has a wide village green in the centre, and close to the beck, complete with what was until 1938 the village's only water supply...the village pump...in its ivy covered limestone enclosure.
The beck is spanned by an attractive but sturdy three arched stone bridge erected in 1819.
