York Before the coming of the Romans, York was the nearest thing that Britain had to a capital city. It was then named Ebor - place where the wild boar crossed the River (Ouse - a corruption of the Celtic Usso). The Romans adapted it to Eboracum but after they left, the Danes came and called it Ebor-wick (inlet or estuary where the boar crossed). This got corrupted to Jorwick (pronounced Yorvik) and hence to York.
