Ton (enclosure or field) beside the (river) Lea. In the 8th century, it was known as Lygetun, in Domesday as Loitone and by the 13th century as both Lowton and Leuton. Leyton has the same meaning. Lea means bright and is associated with the river god Lugus. Luminous has the same root meaning.
