In 1202, it was Maidenhee and in 1262, Maydenhith, so "head" seems to be a relatively modern corruption. A hyth is a landing place so this is possibly where some maegduns (maidens) landed (or maybe they just "hung out" here). Maiden (maegdun) can also refer to a large fortified hill fort (as in Maiden Castle).
