In 750, the town was "Medeshamstedi" (home by the whirlpool). Destroyed by the Danes, it was rebuilt in the 10th century by Benedictines who called it simply "The Burg" which it was called in Domesday. When the Abbey was dedicated to St Peter in 1333, it naturally became "Peter's Burgh" or Peterborough.
