Mallerstang is a quiet and unspoilt valley. This is the place where the last wild boar in England was killed in the 16th century.
     It is a narrow steep-sided valley between Wild Boar fell and High Sea, both over 2,300 feet. Here on Black Fell Moss the River Eden is born close to the border of Yorkshire.
     The charming church of St Mary built in the 14th century. Stained glass window is dedicated to the Saints of Northern England, together with the coat of arms of Lady Anne Clifford. Visitors hould note the set of shelves next to the door which in the past held loaves of bread for the poor of the valley. Surprisingly the bread is still distributed today under an 18th century charity.
     The church was another of the buildings restored by Lady Anne in 1663. Apparently she often travelled between Appleby and Skipton making stops on the way at Pendragon Castle. The castle is now a ruin which lies just below Outhgill.
     This 12th century castle, sometimes referred to as the most romantic ruins in Cumbria, was at one time rebuilt by Lady Anne. Legend says it was the home of Uther Pendragon..the father of King Arthur.
