Old Hutton is approximately five miles south-east of Kendal and consists of five small hamlets.
     Holmescale's Farm is the oldest house in Old Hutton, and has been in the Robinson family since 1904.
     Bleaze Hall dates back to 1600...the Jacobean period. It was apparently built by a Roger Bateman, who it is said made his money as a cloth manufacturer in Kendal. In one of the attics there is a 'dobbie stone' which is a charm to prevent evil spirits or ghosts from disturbing the house.
     It was a noble house built in the last years of Queen Elizabeth I. Much of the grandeur of Bleaze hall has gone, but it has an imposing front, beautiful plaster ceilings, and rich woodwork, one of its spacious rooms has oak panelling with elaborate figures and foliage, and a mantelpiece of Stuart times.
     Beckside has got to be a 'must' for all visitors. No one can help but admire the picturesque scene with its lovely waterfall. The waterfall is part of the river running through the village and is known as Peasey Beck, though below Old Hutton is called the River Bela.
     In the hamlet of St John's View is the school, public hall and St John the Baptist church. The church incidentally has in its possession a silver chalice dating back to 1495.
     In the hamlet of Church View is a house that has a plaque proudly announcing that John Wesley slept one night here as he was on his way from Leeds to Whitehaven.
