Under the finely carved canopy of his tomb are the charming brass portraits of the next Sir John, who died in 1557, his two wives and five children, all kneeling in prayer.
He gave Etwall its almshouses, which were made new in 1681, and he founded Repton School, whose badge is seen on his armour and in the heraldry of his monument.
His heiress married Sir Thomas Gerard, a Roman Catholic suspected of plotting to get Mary, Queen of Scots, out of prison.
