This limestone village of charming old grey houses is in a secluded position below the slopes of Camp Hill, the summit plateau of which is the launching ground of the Derbyshire and Lancashire Gliding Club. Their gliders can be seen taking off from the hill on fine Sundays during the summer and sweeping gracefully over the Bradwell Dale towards the heights beyond. The Northern Gliding Championships are held here each year, usually in July or August, and the World Championships have also taken place here, one of only two places in England.
Great Hucklow is well known for the fascinating little theatre of the Village Players, a company formed in 1927 by L.du Garde Peach, the playwright and producer.
