- Lincoln - The Romans arrived to find the city of "Lindon" (city by the llyn - watery pools of the River Witham). The name became Romanised to Lindum Colonia - hence Lincoln. Bede called the city Lindocolina but by Domesday, this had been shortened to Lincolia.
