- Woodhall Spa - In the 12th century, it was known as Wudehall. Wude is "wood" but Hall is more complicated. It is a Norse word, hallr, meaning slope (of a hill). It is also where we get our modern word "high" from. But as manor houses were normally built on a hill, they, too, became know as the "hall" (high place). The suffix "Spa" came much later.
