- Addington - Enclosed land belonging to Eadda.
- Addiscombe - Aeddi's enclosed land.
- Beddington - Beadda's enclosed land.
- Carshalton - Enclosure by the spring where cress grows.
- Coulsdon - Cuthraed's hill.
- Croydon - Valley of wild saffron.
- Norwood - northern wood. The wood in this case was north of Croydon at a time when Croydon was more important (and possibly larger) then London. The prefixes "west", "south" and "upper" were added later to differentiate between several villages around the edge of this virtually impenatrable forest.
- Purley - wood where pear trees grow.
- Selsdon - Sele's hill.
- Sutton - southern farm.
- Thornton Heath - heath by a farm with thorn trees.
- Waddon - hill where woad grows.
- Wallington - village of the Britons.
