Dün in an early English word which has become a common ending for a landmark built on the edge or end of a low hill or range of hills. South of London there are two ranges of long low hills named the North Downs and the South Downs respectively. Dun has also been used as "dune" (as in sand dune). It is also where we get the English adjective "down" (meaning "below"). |
